Our Story

We Exist Because of These People

Nebraska ranchers who get up before dawn. Alaskan fishermen who risk their lives on the water. Lithuanian bakers keeping immigrant traditions alive. Indiana farmers proving that small family farms still have a place in America. This is who we work for.

Their Stories

Every Product Has a Family Behind It

These aren't brands. They're real people who chose the harder path because it's the right one. Here are some of their stories.

These are 6 of our 14 producers. Every single one chose transparency over convenience, quality over volume, and community over corporate.

Meet All 14 Producers
Why This Matters

These People Are Being Squeezed Out

Between the rancher who raises your beef and the shelf where you buy it, there are 4-6 middlemen. Each takes a cut. Each adds cost. Each reduces transparency. The producer gets pennies. You pay more for less.

Towns like Benkelman (pop. 914) lose families every year because small producers can't compete with the volume pricing of industrial agriculture. The fishermen in Bristol Bay, the bakers in Omaha, the farmers in Indiana — they all face the same wall.

Food Store Direct removes that wall.

The FSD Supply Chain

1

2
You

The producer packs your order. The producer ships your box. FSD is the platform that connects you directly.

The Solution

You Buy. They Ship. Nobody in Between.

When you order from Food Store Direct, your money goes directly to the producer who made your food. They pack it. They ship it. No warehouse. No anonymous middleman.

The rancher in Benkelman gets paid fairly for their beef. The fishermen in Alaska keep more of what their catch is worth. The baker in Omaha can keep making tortes by hand instead of cutting corners.

Real Impact

What Your Purchase Supports

Every order is a vote for a different kind of food system.

🏡

Small Towns Stay Alive

When you buy from Dundy County, that money stays in Benkelman (pop. 914). When you buy from Buzz Savories, it stays in Holdrege (pop. 5,500). Your order keeps small-town America employed.

👨‍🌾

Families Stay on the Land

Every sale helps a rancher keep ranching, a fisherman keep fishing, a baker keep baking. These families chose this life. Your purchase makes it sustainable.

🌎

Traditions Survive

Lithuanian torte recipes. Native bison conservation. Heritage pork genetics. Alaskan fishing traditions. These are living cultural treasures. Your dollar keeps them alive.

⚖️

Producers Get Paid Fairly

Shipping & Split the Box

Shipping Is Priced Per Box — So Share the Box

One insulated box costs nearly the same whether it holds 6 lb or 24 lb — the cooler, the ice, and the label are the cost, not the food inside. That one truth shapes everything in this section, starting with the smartest way to use it: splitting a box with neighbors, family, or your parish.

Private invite link · everyone pays only for what they get · shipping splits by weight

📦
Live on Food Store Direct

Start a box, share your private link, and everyone pays only for what they get — shipping splits by weight across the group. Start a shared box →

Split the Box

Farm-direct shipping is priced per box, not per steak. Share one insulated box with neighbors, family, or your parish — one combined order to one door — and per-household shipping drops by half to two-thirds.

How it works today

🏠
1. Start your box

Pick a farm, open a box, and get your private invite link — text it to neighbors, family, or your parish group. Only people with the link can join.

🛒
2. Everyone adds their own items

Each person picks what they want from the farm and pays only for their share — their food plus a slice of the one shipping charge, split by weight. Never more than shipping alone.

📦
3. One box ships to the host

Weather-set transit, insulated packaging, gel packs. Every item inside is individually vacuum-sealed with the producer's own label.

🤝
4. Hand out sealed packages

Everyone picks up their factory-sealed packages the day it lands. Nothing is ever opened or repacked, and no money changes hands between neighbors — everyone already paid their own share.

It's not just beef

Some producers charge one flat shipping rate per order no matter how much you add — split those and shipping nearly disappears:

Hot sauce & preserves
$12 flat per order → $3 each at four households
Bison & elk snacks
$25 flat per order → $6.25 each at four households
Coffee
Free shipping at 5+ bags — a coffee pool ships free today

The host card

Hosting is one job done well. Six rules, no exceptions:

  1. 1Everything arrives frozen, individually sealed, in one insulated box with gel packs.
  2. 2The one rule: everything goes in a freezer the day it arrives — yours or theirs, same day.
  3. 3Neighbors pick up within 24 hours. Hand them sealed packages — never open or repack anything.
  4. 4Everyone pays Food Store Direct directly through your box link — their own share, their own receipt. No money changes hands between neighbors, ever.
  5. 5Every package is the producer's own labeled retail product, so everyone knows exactly whose ranch it came from. That's the point.
  6. 6Keep one pool to about four households (~30 lb) per farm. Bigger crew? Start a second box.

Honest questions

Why is this so much cheaper?+

Cold-chain shipping cost is mostly the box: the insulated cooler, the gel packs, and the carrier's per-package fees. The meat inside is nearly free to add — so the fuller the box, the cheaper every pound ships. That's the whole idea: get your shipping cost per pound as low as it can possibly go. And we don't make money on shipping — you pay what the box costs to pack and send (sometimes a couple bucks extra so we never lose money on one), and anything left over goes right back into better boxes and better prices.

Is the cold chain safe?+

Yes — it's the same insulated box and weather-set transit window every FSD order uses. Nothing changes about how it ships; the only difference is more food in the box. The host's job is one sentence: everything in a freezer the day it arrives.

Can we each pay separately?+

That's exactly how it works. Everyone joins through the box's private link, adds their own items, and pays Food Store Direct directly for their own share — food plus their weight's slice of the one shipping charge. Own receipt for everyone, and no money ever changes hands between neighbors.

Does it work across different farms?+

Pooling works per farm — each producer packs and ships their own box. Mixing farms is fine; you'll just see one box (and one shipping charge) per farm. The deepest savings come from going deep on one farm.

When do we actually pay?+

You reserve your share when you join — nothing is charged that day. When the host closes the box, each person gets a secure payment link for exactly their final share, which only goes down as more people join. And a real person stands behind every box: email cameron@foodstoredirect.com and the founder answers same-day.

Start your box

Open a private box, get an invite link, and share it with your people. Everyone adds their own items and pays only for what they get — shipping splits by weight. Payment links go out when you close the box; nothing is charged before then.

How Shipping Is Calculated

1

One Box Per Farm, Priced as a Box

Each producer packs and ships their own insulated box. The box, liner, ice, and label are the cost — filling it (or sharing it) is what drops the price per pound.

2

Weather Picks the Service

The live forecast on your lane sets the transit window. Perishables ship UPS Ground whenever the lane genuinely delivers inside the window — otherwise 2nd Day Air on hot weeks, 3 Day Select on mild ones. Never overnight, never a slow service in heat.

3

We Don't Make Money on Shipping

Our goal is simple: get your shipping cost per pound as low as it can possibly go. Carriers bid your exact box, and you pay what it costs to pack and send — sometimes a couple bucks extra so we never lose money on a box, with anything left over going right back into better boxes and better prices. Fill the box, or split it with neighbors, and every pound ships cheaper.

Shipping Tips

Combine items to save

Adding more items from the same producer may keep you in the same shipping tier. A 6 lb order and a 7 lb order cost the same to ship if they're in the same tier.

Perishable orders ship Monday

Place perishable orders by Sunday night for Monday shipment. Orders placed after Monday ship the following week.

Someone should be home

Perishable packages need to be brought inside promptly. If you're not home, consider having them delivered to your workplace.

Check free shipping items

Some products include free shipping. Look for the green 'Free Shipping' badge on product pages.

Important Shipping Notices

Estimated Delivery Dates

All delivery dates shown on this site are estimates only and are not guaranteed by Food Store Direct. Transit delays caused by weather, carrier issues, holidays, or other circumstances beyond our control do not constitute a breach of service.

Perishable Delivery Responsibility

It is your responsibility to provide an accurate shipping address and to be available to receive perishable shipments promptly upon delivery. FSD and its Producers are not responsible for product condition if a perishable package is left unattended after delivery (e.g., on a doorstep in heat).

Carrier Delays

If a carrier delay results in a perishable product arriving in a compromised condition, contact us within 48 hours at support@foodstoredirect.com with photos. We will work with the carrier and our shipping insurance provider to resolve the issue. See our Refund Policy for full details on eligibility.

Shipping Zones

Certain perishable products may be restricted to the 48 contiguous states depending on transit times to Alaska and Hawaii. Check individual product pages for shipping availability.

Fresh Pass — membership, not markup

No games, nothing hidden. Non-members pay the producer's price plus a flat 15% markup that keeps our lights on. Fresh Pass members pay our true cost — that markup, gone. On the shelf price, that's 13% off, every order. (Fresh Pass Plus, which would also erase shipping, isn't built yet.)

Questions, answered straight.

Is it really at cost?+

Yes. Members pay the producer's price plus our true, fully-loaded shipping and handling cost — no product markup. A $100 shelf price costs a member $86.96. We make our money on the membership fee, not on your food. That's the whole idea.

Why do you say 13% when the markup is 15%?+

Because they're percentages of two different numbers. We add 15% on top of what the producer charges: a $100 shelf price is $86.96 of producer cost plus $13.04 of our markup. Take the markup off and you save $13.04 — that's 13% of what you would have paid. Same money, honest math.

What's the catch?+

There isn't a hidden one, but here's the honest line: Basic is $19.99/mo, and the removed markup covers that fee at about $153 of food a month. Spend less than that and the membership isn't worth it yet — buy without it, we'd rather keep you than charge you. Spend more and every dollar past $153 is straight savings.

Do I have to be a member to shop?+

No. Fresh Pass is completely optional. You can buy anything on Food Store Direct without it — no forced subscriptions, no auto-ship boxes. The membership just unlocks our true-cost pricing.

How will shipping work on Plus?+

Plus hasn't launched — nothing here is for sale yet. When it does: you'll choose how far you want covered (your state, your region, or the whole country), and within that reach Fresh Pass Plus pays the carrier label. You'd front a small refundable deposit on the reusable cooler and get it back when the cooler comes home.

What about Alaska seafood or fresh dairy?+

Those lanes are genuinely expensive to ship, so today you pay our true cost on them — never a marked-up one. When Plus launches they'll live in the top reach tiers (+ Alaska, + Alaska + Hawaii).

Can I cancel?+

Anytime, right from your Account page — one click and a confirm, no phone call, no chat maze. You keep member pricing through the end of the period you've already paid for, then billing just stops. Change your mind before it ends and one click keeps it running. No contracts, no penalties. Membership, not markup.

Support

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about ordering from Food Store Direct. Can't find your answer? Contact us.

Ordering

How do I place an order?

Browse our product catalog, add items to your cart, and check out securely online. You'll receive an order confirmation email immediately, and a second email with tracking information once your producer ships your order.

Can I order from multiple producers in one order?

Yes! You can add products from any of our producers to your cart. Each producer will pack and ship their products separately, so you may receive multiple packages. Shipping is calculated per producer based on the total weight of their items in your cart.

Do you require a subscription?

Never. Food Store Direct is not a subscription box. You order what you want, when you want. No commitments, no recurring charges, no "skip this month" hassles. Just real food, on your terms.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover), PayPal, and Apple Pay through our secure checkout powered by Stripe.

Is my payment information secure?

Yes. All payment processing is handled by Stripe, which is PCI-DSS Level 1 certified — the highest level of payment security. Your credit card information never touches our servers. Every transaction is encrypted end-to-end.

How do I track my order?

Once your producer ships your order, you'll receive an email with a tracking number and carrier information (typically UPS or USPS). You can track your package directly through the carrier's website. If you ordered from multiple producers, you'll receive a separate tracking number for each shipment.

Can I cancel or modify my order?

Contact us as soon as possible at support@foodstoredirect.com. If the producer hasn't packed your order yet, we can usually make changes. Once an order is packed and shipped, modifications aren't possible.

What does 'sold by the pound' mean?

Some products (like steaks and seafood fillets) are sold by weight. You select your preferred weight or portion size, and the price is calculated based on the per-pound rate. The actual weight may vary slightly from your selection since these are natural products hand-cut by the producer.

Shipping

How does shipping work?

Each producer ships directly from their facility to your door. Shipping rates are based on the total weight of items from each producer. When you add items to your cart, you'll see the exact shipping cost before checkout.

How are perishable items shipped?

All perishable items (meat, seafood, tortes) are packed in foil-lined insulated bags with ice packs on top and bottom, sealed with tamper-proof stickers, and shipped via expedited carriers (typically UPS 2-3 Day Select). This is our Perishable Standard — ensuring your food arrives cold and safe. Perishable orders ship on Mondays to avoid weekend transit.

How are non-perishable items shipped?

Non-perishable items (hot sauce, coffee, honey, mustard, popcorn, BBQ sauces, jerky, freeze-dried products) ship via USPS Priority Mail or UPS Ground in standard packaging. These producers typically ship Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Transit time is 3-5 business days.

Do you offer free shipping?

Some products include free shipping — look for the 'Free Shipping' badge on product pages. For other items, shipping is calculated by weight. We're always working to offer the best rates possible.

What if my perishable order arrives thawed?

Do NOT consume the product if it appears thawed, warm, or has damaged packaging. Contact us within 48 hours at support@foodstoredirect.com with photos of the product and packaging. Include your tracking number. We'll investigate with the carrier and producer, and if the claim meets our refund policy conditions, we'll issue a replacement or refund. Timely photos are required for all claims.

Do you ship to Alaska and Hawaii?

Shipping availability and rates vary by producer. Most producers ship to all 50 states, but some perishable items have delivery zone restrictions to ensure food safety during transit. Check the product page for specific shipping details.

What day do orders ship?

Perishable producers (meat, seafood, tortes) ship on Mondays to minimize transit time and avoid weekend delays. Non-perishable producers ship Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. You'll see the next ship date on each producer's page.

Products & Quality

What does 'mRNA vaccine free' mean?

Our producers do not use mRNA vaccines on their animals. This is part of our commitment to transparency — you have the right to know exactly what goes into the food you eat. We verify this directly with every meat and seafood producer we work with.

Are your products USDA inspected?

Yes. Every meat and seafood producer on Food Store Direct operates in a USDA-inspected facility. This is a non-negotiable requirement before any producer is listed on our platform.

What does 'no antibiotics, no growth hormones' mean?

Our meat and bison producers raise animals without the routine use of antibiotics or synthetic growth hormones. The animals are raised naturally — on pasture, eating grass, living the way nature intended.

Is your beef really grass-fed?

Yes. Our beef producers (like Dundy County Processors) raise 100% grass-fed AND grass-finished cattle. This means the cattle eat grass their entire lives — no grain finishing in feedlots. The result is leaner, more flavorful beef with higher omega-3 content.

How fresh is the seafood?

Our Alaska seafood from 49th State Seafoods is wild-caught in Bristol Bay and flash-frozen on the boat within hours of harvest. Flash-freezing at peak freshness actually preserves quality better than "fresh" fish that spent days on ice in transit. It's the freshest seafood you can get without being on the boat.

What's the shelf life of freeze-dried products?

Straight Arrow Bison's freeze-dried ground bison has a 25-year shelf life when stored properly. Perfect for emergency preparedness, camping, or anyone who wants nutrient-dense protein on hand at all times.

Our Producers

Who are your producers?

We work with small, independent American food producers — family ranchers, fishermen, bakers, and craft food makers. Every producer is verified, and we share their stories so you know exactly who grows your food. Visit our Producers page to meet them all.

How do you choose producers?

Every producer goes through our vetting process: USDA inspection verification (for meat/seafood), quality standards review, shipping capability assessment, and alignment with our values — transparency, quality, and treating animals and land with respect.

Do producers set their own prices?

Yes. Producers set their own prices. Food Store Direct does not inflate prices — we earn a small marketplace commission. The price you see is a fair price set by the person who actually made the product.

Can I visit the producers?

Many of our producers welcome visitors! Check individual producer pages for location details, or contact us and we can help arrange a visit. There's nothing like seeing where your food comes from firsthand.

I'm a food producer. How do I join?

Visit our 'Become a Producer' page or email us at support@foodstoredirect.com. We're actively looking for quality American food producers who share our values. No listing fees, no monthly charges — just great food and a fair commission.

Recycling & Sustainability

Do you have a recycling program?

Yes! Our Recycle & Return Program lets you send back shipping materials — insulated boxes, cooler liners, gel packs, and glass milk bottles — for a rebate on your next order. Every shipment includes a prepaid return label. Visit our Recycle & Return page for full details.

What can I return for a rebate?

Insulated shipping boxes ($3.00 rebate), insulated liners and cooler bags ($2.00), glass milk bottles ($2.50), and dry ice containers or gel packs ($1.00). Items must be clean, structurally sound, and free of damage.

How do I return shipping materials?

Use the prepaid return label included in your shipment. Pack the reusable items, drop the package at any UPS location, and your rebate is automatically applied as store credit within 5-7 business days of receipt.

Why does FSD recycle packaging?

Insulated shipping materials are expensive. By reusing boxes, liners, and gel packs, we keep costs down for everyone and reduce waste. Every returned box is sanitized, inspected, and put back into circulation. It's good for the planet and good for your wallet.

Returns & Issues

What's your return policy?

Due to the perishable nature of most products, we don't accept standard returns on food items. If your perishable order arrives in a compromised condition (thawed, warm, damaged packaging), contact us within 48 hours at support@foodstoredirect.com with photos of the product and packaging. If the delivery was within the carrier's guaranteed transit window and you meet the claim requirements, we'll work with the carrier to arrange a replacement or refund. Non-perishable items can be returned within 14 days if they arrive damaged. See our full Refund Policy at foodstoredirect.com/refund-policy.

What if an item is out of stock?

Product availability is updated in real time. If a product shows 'Sold Out,' the producer is temporarily out of stock. Many products are seasonal or produced in small batches. Check back regularly or contact us to be notified when it's back.

How do I contact customer support?

Email us at support@foodstoredirect.com. We respond to every message personally — no bots, no ticket systems. You can also reach us on Twitter @Foods_Direct or Facebook @foodstoredirect.

Still Have Questions?

We answer every message personally. No bots. No ticket queues. Real humans who care about your experience.

A Collective Effort

More Recycling = Cheaper Shipping for Everyone

Perishable shipping uses expensive, high-quality packaging — insulated boxes, foil liners, gel packs. Most companies treat it as single-use waste. We treat it as an asset worth preserving.

Every box that comes back is one less box we have to buy. That savings goes directly into lower shipping costs for the entire FSD community. When you recycle, you're not just earning money back — you're making it cheaper for every customer who orders after you. That's a real collective effort.
